Five checks before you buy

  • Voltage: match the timer to the circuit supply. The products above do not all use the same stated voltage.
  • Load: check the rated load and the actual LED load, especially on low-wattage circuits.
  • Location: indoor and outdoor ratings are not interchangeable. Do not place an IP20 control outside.
  • Wiring: confirm whether a neutral wire, DIN rail or specific cable arrangement is required.
  • Lighting type: LED bulbs and drivers can behave differently from older resistive loads. Check the product guidance if flicker or reset problems matter.

Common questions about timer switches

Can a timer switch control LED bulbs?

Is a day/night sensor the same as a timer?

Both automate switching, but they use different triggers. A timer follows a clock or programmed schedule; a day/night sensor responds to ambient light. Choose based on whether the control should follow a fixed routine or daylight.

Can I install a timer without a neutral wire?

That depends on the specific control. Many hardwired timers require a neutral connection, while some products are designed differently. Check the wiring diagram and have an electrician inspect the circuit rather than borrowing an earth conductor.

Why does a timer lose its settings?

Digital timers may rely on a backup battery or internal clock. A depleted backup cell, incorrect programming or a power interruption can reset the schedule. Read the product instructions for the exact model.

Can I use an outdoor timer for any exterior light?
