Solar wall-light guide

How to install solar wall lights and fix common problems

Use this guide to choose a suitable wall position, prepare the surface, get the first charge right and work through the usual reasons a solar light stays dark.

Start with the wall, not the fitting

A solar wall light needs a clear route to daylight. Before you compare finishes or motion sensors, check where the panel will sit, whether the wall can take the fixing and whether the light is meant to guide movement, mark an entrance or improve visibility.

For a wider range of outdoor applications, see the solar light collection and our LED outdoor wall lights.

Choose the right solar wall-light setup

The best option depends on the wall, the amount of direct sun and how people use the space after dark. These live products give you three different starting points without asking you to guess from a generic category label.

Match the light to the wall and the job

Use the matrix before you buy. It keeps the decision practical and makes it easier to spot when a solar fitting is the wrong solution for the location.

Situation What to look for Check before ordering
Entrance or gate A clear beam and a position that receives useful daylight. Walk the route after dark and confirm the panel will not sit in permanent shade.
Steps or a side passage A compact fitting mounted where it cannot be knocked or snagged. Measure the fixing area and check the light will not shine directly into approaching eyes.
Patio or entertainment wall A finish and light direction that sit comfortably with the wall and furniture. Check the solar panel view from midday through late afternoon, not only at installation time.
Security-focused approach A product listing that explicitly states motion sensing or the required outdoor rating. Use the live product specifications. Do not assume every solar wall light has the same sensor or IP rating.

Five checks before you drill

1. SunlightFind the brightest practical panel position and note shade from eaves, trees or neighbouring walls.
2. SurfaceConfirm the brick, plaster or cladding can take the supplied fixing method.
3. HeightPlace the fitting high enough to avoid knocks, while keeping the panel exposed and the light useful.
4. DirectionAim the light at the path, entrance or wall detail that needs visibility. Avoid glare into windows.
5. First chargeFollow the product instructions for the switch and initial charge before judging night-time performance.

For products with a separate panel, sensor or control arrangement, follow the product listing and supplied instructions. A qualified installer should handle any work that introduces mains wiring.

When a solar wall light is not working

Work through the simple checks before moving the fitting or replacing a component.

It does not switch on at night

Check that the unit is switched on, remove any transport tab, clean the panel and give it a full day of direct light. Cover the panel briefly to test whether the light responds to darkness.

It charges but runs for a short time

Look for shade, dirt on the panel or a location that receives less winter sun. Runtime also depends on the product's battery and operating mode, so check the live specification rather than applying a universal number.

The sensor does not trigger

Check the sensor's field of view and remove nearby obstructions. Make sure the model you selected actually lists motion sensing; solar wall lights do not all use the same control method.

It needs a replacement battery

Do not guess the battery type. Read the product information or the battery compartment marking first, then compare suitable options in the battery section.

Solar wall-light questions, answered

Can I install a solar wall light on brick?

Yes, provided the wall and fixing method are suitable for the fitting. Mark the holes carefully, use the correct wall plugs and keep the panel clear of shade.

Are solar wall lights waterproof?

Only rely on the IP rating shown for the exact product. The solar wall-light collection includes products with different specifications, so check the listing before placing a fitting in an exposed position.

Can artificial light charge a solar panel?

Artificial light is a poor substitute for daylight. Position the panel where it can receive direct sun and use the product instructions for charging and operation.
