A practical sensor-light buying guide

Choose motion sensor lighting for the job, not just the fitting.

The right sensor light should make a space easier to use without leaving you guessing about placement, voltage, indoor or outdoor suitability, or how the detection actually fits your routine.

Choose by applicationIndoor stripFixed ceilingOutdoor floodlightThen verify voltage, IP rating, dimensions and installation conditions.
For cupboards and shelves

Choose a rechargeable strip when you want low-level indoor light to come on as you approach, without wiring a new ceiling fitting.

For passages and entrances

Choose a flush ceiling fitting when you need a brighter, hands-free light in a fixed indoor position.

For driveways and outdoor edges

Choose an adjustable-head floodlight when the fitting needs outdoor protection and directional coverage.

Three sensible starting points

These routes are based on the product’s actual format, rating and electrical requirements. Start with the application, then check the fitting and installation conditions.

Compare the decision before you buy

The most important difference is not the word “sensor” on the product title. It is where the fitting will live, how it is powered and how much light the space needs.

Hands-free light inside a cupboard or beneath a shelf Rechargeable motion sensor strip Indoor IP20 suitability, available charging access and the 1 metre strip length.

Compatibility and installation checkpoints

Before you choose the fitting

  • Measure the mounting area and confirm the product dimensions.
  • Decide whether the light is indoors or exposed to weather.
  • Check whether you need a rechargeable unit or a fixed mains connection.
  • Choose the colour temperature that suits the room or route.

Before installation

  • Confirm the supply voltage and installation location against the product listing.
  • Do not treat an IP20 indoor product as an outdoor fitting.
  • Use a qualified installer for mains-voltage products.
  • Allow for sensor position, detection direction and the intended approach path.
Need a second opinion?

Tell us where the light must work.

Share the room or outdoor area, mounting position, available supply and the behaviour you want. Future Light can help you narrow the route before you order.

Choose with fewer surprises.

Start with the application, verify the electrical and environmental requirements, then select the sensor light that fits the space.
