IP65 downlights for damp and splash-prone spaces

Choose IP65 downlights with the right protection for the space

IP65 is useful when a ceiling fitting needs protection from dust and water jets, but the rating does not answer every installation question. Start with the room, the mounting position and the fitting's actual construction, then check the cut-out, lamp format and electrical requirements before you buy.

Start with the installation

IP65 helps with moisture, not with every site decision

IP65 means the fitting is dust-tight and protected against water jets. It does not mean that every IP65 downlight can be installed in an exposed location, above every wet zone or into any ceiling opening. Check the manufacturer's application details, keep the electrical connection suitable for the location and use a qualified electrician for mains installation.

Bathroom ceiling

Check the fitting's position against the shower, bath and basin, then confirm the local wet-area requirements before installation. A bathroom collection is a useful place to compare related fittings.

Covered exterior area

Confirm that the specific fitting is suitable for the level of exposure. IP65 is a product fact, not a blanket promise that an unprotected fitting belongs outdoors.

Existing ceiling

Measure the cut-out and available depth. A surface-mounted model may be the cleaner route when a recessed opening is unavailable or cannot be altered.

Clean recessed layouts

White Recessed Downlight IP65

This recessed white fitting uses a polycarbonate body and GU10 lamp format. Its listed IP65 rating makes it relevant to damp areas, but the cut-out and ceiling depth still need to be checked before ordering.

Before the electrician arrives

Five checks that prevent a poor fit

1. Measure

Record the ceiling cut-out, fitting depth and any obstruction above the ceiling.

2. Confirm the lamp path

Check whether the fitting uses a GU10 lamp, an integrated LED source or another specified arrangement.

3. Confirm the location

Match the exact product's IP rating and application notes to the room or exterior position.

4. Plan the light

Consider beam direction, spacing and whether a fixed, tiltable or surface-mounted format suits the task.

5. Use qualified installation

Have mains wiring and wet-area installation checked and completed by a qualified electrician.

Common questions

Questions worth answering before you buy

Are IP65 downlights waterproof?

They are dust-tight and protected against water jets under the IP test rating. That is different from saying every product is suitable for immersion or every outdoor position.

Can an IP65 downlight use a GU10 lamp?

Some can. The White GU10 Downlight, IP65 and the White Recessed Downlight IP65 are listed with GU10 compatibility. Check the individual product page rather than assuming the lamp format.

Should I use IP65 everywhere in a bathroom?

Not automatically. Match the fitting and its position to the wet-area requirements, ceiling construction and the advice of the electrician doing the installation.
