Future Light buying guide

Floor lamps for home offices

A floor lamp can add useful task light beside a desk, soften a workroom after hours or provide a flexible source where ceiling light is not enough. The right choice depends on beam direction, control, colour temperature, height and how much floor space the base needs.

Key takeaway

Choose the light for the way the office is used

For paperwork and reading, prioritise directed light and control. For video calls and general room comfort, add a softer layer that does not create glare on a screen. Check the lamp height, base footprint and cable or battery arrangement before deciding where it will stand.

Desk and screen position

Place the light to the side of the dominant hand where possible, avoiding reflections on the monitor and keeping the beam out of the camera line.

Control and colour

Dimming, selectable colour temperature or independently switchable heads can make one lamp useful for concentrated work and a quieter evening setting.

Clearance and stability

Measure the base location and leave a clear route around it. A tall fitting still needs a stable position away from chair wheels, doors and trailing cables.

Installation and use

Set up the lamp without creating a new workspace problem

1. Test the position

Put the base beside the desk, chair or console and check that the lamp does not interfere with drawers, chair movement or a clear walkway.

2. Aim before increasing brightness

Direct the light onto the work surface first. A better angle often reduces glare more effectively than simply choosing a brighter setting.

3. Match the fitting to the supply

Check the listing’s voltage, lamp cap, battery and indoor-use information. Do not use an indoor IP20 fitting in a damp or exposed location.

Bulb note: The Mother & Son and Industrial Steel models depend on the selected lamp or bulb for their final light output. Check the product listing and choose a suitable E27 or compatible lamp before ordering.
