Fibre Optic Ceiling Light Installation Guide

Installing a fibre optic ceiling can create a starry-sky effect without placing a conventional light fitting at every point. The GFP DIY kits are pre-grouped and labelled for the layout shown in the supplied diagrams. Read the complete instructions and confirm the surface, access and electrical arrangements before starting.

Important: swimming-pool use is for new builds only and only for Marbelite, mosaic tile or Pebbletech finishes, as specified by GFP. Do not treat this ceiling DIY guide as approval for a retrofit pool installation.

Choose the kit size

  • 100-star kit: 1m × 3m layout shown in the supplier diagram.
  • 200-star kit: 2m × 3m layout shown in the supplier diagram.
  • 300-star kit: 3m × 3m layout shown in the supplier diagram.

Each block represents 1 square metre, although the supplier notes that blocks can be extended. Every block includes 22 × 0.75mm fibres, using a 1mm drill bit, and 11 × 1.00mm fibres, using a 1.2mm drill bit. The light source must be housed in the centre position of the display area.

1. Mark the blocks

Mark out the labelled blocks on the finished ceiling or surface before drilling. Complete painting or finishing first so the final surface is ready for the fibre ends.

2. Drill from underneath upwards

Drill from the underside upwards, then insert the tags to find the holes from the top side. Use a 1mm drill bit for the 0.75mm fibres and a 1.2mm drill bit for the 1.00mm fibres. Do not press too hard: the drill bit is thin and can break.

3. Feed and secure the fibres

Feed the fibres through all holes, keeping the light source at the centre of the ceiling. Place a drop of glue where each fibre meets the hole on the topside. Allow the glue to dry fully.

4. Connect and trim

Connect the light source to the switch or power as instructed. Once the glue has dried, use precision cutters from the underside of the ceiling to clip the fibres flush with the surface.

Layout tips

  • Small clusters generally look better than an evenly spread layout.
  • If a hole is misplaced, dip the tag in the same paint as the ceiling, press it into the incorrect hole and pull outwards so the paint closes the hole or mistake.
  • Keep the light source accessible for servicing and use a qualified person for electrical connections.
