Addressable LED strip guide

Choose the right addressable LED strip for your installation

Addressable strips are useful when one continuous colour is not enough. They let a compatible controller send changing effects along the run, but the strip voltage, data format, power supply and connection method still need to match.

Start with the application, then compare 5V, 12V and 24V options, indoor IP20 limitations and the control hardware that completes the system.

Three sensible starting points

Match the strip to the job before you compare effects

A strip roll is only one part of an addressable lighting system. These products show the practical differences between a compact 5V run, a general-purpose 12V option and a separate RF controller for installations where control matters.

LED Smart Strip Light - Addressable 12V WS2811 60LED

12V WS2811 strip · IP20

This 12V WS2811 strip is a useful starting point for indoor feature lighting, shelving, display areas and media-wall accents where a lower-voltage addressable roll is needed.

The 5m roll is listed at 14.4W per metre. Confirm the total run, power supply and controller before ordering.

LED Smart Strip Light - Addressable 5V WS2811 60LED

5V WS2811 strip · IP20

This 5V WS2811 strip suits compact indoor accents where the installation already calls for 5V operation and the control system is specified for that format.

The listing states 18W per metre. Plan power injection and connection points around the actual run rather than treating 5V and 12V strips as interchangeable.

LED Strip Light - RF Remote with Receiver SPI DMX 1024 Pixels

RF controller · 5–24V DC

This RF controller is a separate control component for compatible SPI addressable strips. It is suited to indoor displays, shelving, counters and media-wall applications that need remote scene changes.

The listing identifies a 5–24V DC range and IP20 indoor use. Match the controller to the strip protocol, voltage and power arrangement before connecting it.

Compare the practical constraints

Voltage, environment and control decide the setup

Question What to check Why it matters
Which voltage? Choose the strip voltage first: 5V, 12V or 24V. The power supply and controller must match the strip. Voltage is not a cosmetic choice.
Where will it go? The products shown here are listed as IP20 or non-waterproof. Use them in dry indoor locations unless the exact product page states a suitable environmental rating.
How will it be controlled? Check whether the strip needs an SPI controller, RF remote or another compatible control method. An addressable strip still needs a control signal and correctly matched wiring to produce its intended effects.
How will it be powered? Calculate the strip run and wattage per metre before choosing the power supply. Power planning affects reliability, voltage drop and whether the installation can run as intended.

Before you order

Four checks that prevent an expensive mismatch

1. Confirm the data format

WS2811, controller type and strip wiring must agree. Do not assume a controller described as smart will suit every addressable strip.

2. Measure the run

Record the installed length, bends and connection points. Use the listed wattage per metre to plan the power requirement.

3. Keep the environment honest

IP20 and non-waterproof products are for dry indoor locations. Choose a different rated system where the installation is exposed to moisture.

Complete the system

Build the striplight setup around verified compatibility

For a complete project, compare the strip itself with LED striplight components, LED power supplies and connectors and cabling. For a cleaner channel-and-diffuser finish, review LED extrusion profiles. Each supporting collection has a different job, so check the product specifications rather than buying by appearance alone.
