Four checks before you choose a bulb

These checks prevent the most common mismatch: a bulb that fits the holder but does not dim cleanly.

1. Lamp cap

Match the cap first. GU10, B22 and E14 bulbs are not interchangeable, even when their shapes look similar.

2. Dimming label

Choose a bulb whose product information confirms dimmability. Do not infer it from the fact that the bulb is LED.

3. Dimmer type

LED dimmers are designed for smaller electronic loads than old incandescent circuits. Check the dimmer's stated load range and installation instructions.

4. Fitting and environment

Confirm the bulb is suitable for the fitting and location. Indoor IP20 products should not be presented as weatherproof outdoor lamps.

Five practical checks

  • Turn off the supply and use a qualified electrician for fixed wiring or dimmer replacement.
  • Confirm the cap and voltage match the fitting. A bulb that screws or clips in is not automatically electrically compatible.
  • Check the dimmer's LED load range against the total connected load, not only the wattage of one bulb.
  • If the light flickers, buzzes or drops out at low settings, stop treating it as a bulb-only problem. Check the dimmer, minimum load and wiring.
  • For outdoor use, confirm the complete fitting's environmental rating. A dimmable bulb alone does not make an indoor fitting weather-resistant.

Dimming questions that come up before purchase

Are all LED bulbs dimmable?

Can a dimmable LED bulb work with a normal on/off switch?

Common causes include a mismatched dimmer, a load below the dimmer's minimum, wiring issues or a bulb and dimmer combination that has not been tested together.
