Open-plan chandelier guide

Chandeliers for open-plan homes

In an open-plan home, a chandelier should define one zone—usually dining, a lounge setting or an entrance—while still sitting comfortably within the wider room. Compare scale, visual weight, hanging position and light distribution before choosing the fitting.

Plan the zone first

Three checks that prevent an oversized or lost fitting

Define what it belongs to

Use the chandelier to anchor a dining table, seating group or entrance rather than trying to light every part of the open plan from one centre point.

Measure the visual footprint

Compare diameter, height and clearance with the furniture below it and the circulation route around it. A large room can still have a compact fitting zone.

Confirm the installation

Check the listed lamp details, weight, fixing method and hanging requirements. Arrange suitable installation support where the fitting is heavy or access is difficult.

Question Why it matters What to check
Which zone should it define? A clear zone keeps the fitting purposeful instead of making it compete with every area in the room. Dining table, seating group, entrance or another defined furniture arrangement.
How much visual weight can the room carry? Glass, beads, crystal and dark metal create different levels of presence even at similar dimensions. Finish, shade material, number of lights and the surrounding furniture.
Will the hanging height work? A fitting that hangs too low interrupts movement; one that is too high can lose its relationship with the furniture. Ceiling height, table or seating height, clearance and the product's listed dimensions.

Need help narrowing the shortlist?

Send us the room dimensions, ceiling height and a photo or sketch of the intended zone. We can help you compare suitable fittings and identify the installation details to confirm.
